Good example of the Marling XXX 1872 Pocket Revolver in .30 Rim-Fire

The ultimate in close quarter self protection or excellent back-up when you find yourself in a tight spot back in the 1870’s.  This simple yet reliable, easily concealled revolver had a 5-shot cylinder and a single action mechanism.  Advertised as being of the very best quality with excellent workmanship the adverts of the day went to great pains to point out; “They are not liable to get out of order, and in every respect are perfectly safe….”  Little did they know that, we as collectors would be marvelling over the fact that they are still in as reliable mechanical condition as they were when first sold, 149 years later …!

This neat little revolver was completely finished in Nickel with Rosewood grips.  It is approximately 7″ long.  The round ribbed barrel is 3″ long and it weigs about 12 ounces.   Basically built as a “Tip-Up” revolver with a hindge at the top.  A release catch is situated at the base of the frame which when pushed in an upward direction allows the revolver to open for reloading and the manuel removal of spent cartridges.  The rod that protudes under barrel is to help push the empties out of the cylinder should they stick.  One has to remove the cylinder which slides off forwards once the revolver has been opened; then reverse the cylinder and push the rod into the spent cartridge. The rod will then push the empty out backwards with a little pressure. Fresh cartridges can then be inserted.

As the revlover is single action the hammer has to be pulled rearward to cock the weapon.  AS this is done the trigger is moved outwards and forwards ready for use, having been concealed to avoid accidental discharge while being carried. Pulling the hammer also operates the prawl which move the cylinder on to the next chamberand allows the stop pin to lock the cylinder in position underneath.  The revolver is now ready to fire.  Round inspection cover on LHS of frame affixed by a single screw.

Smooth Rosewood grips securred by a single screw.  During preperation and cleaning for sale, the serial number “7625” was observed upon the frame and the inside of the grips.  It can also be seen iside the lower portion of the frame when open.  Also clearly marked on the rear face of the cylinder, so all parts match on this particular 1872 revolver.  The bore has 6 groove rifling and some intermittant damage from pitting caused by the black powder remainig in the bore after firing.

The top surface of the barrel rib is roll engraved; “No 32 STANDARD 1875″.  Once the cross-hatched hammer spur has pulled back for cocking, it is possible to see through the sights.  There is a simple V-groove in the rear portion of the hindge and a rounded silver blade front sight.  The LHS of the barrel is marked”J.M.MARLIN. NEW HAVEN CT.  U.S.PAT JULY 1873”.  Condition of the nickel is good and seems to be original but there is some flaking around the edges.  A few patches have started on the lower RHS of the barrel possibly due to storage over time.

An interesting and mechanically sound revolver by one of Americas’ top makers, and from a time when you had to be prepared to look after yourself if needs be.
