Swedish Mauser Model M1896 Rifle…..SOLD
Created on November 12th 2012
A Good Mauser produced Swedish M96 rifle.
Serial number on action wall 4917. Overall length 51.1/8″ with flash hider. Barrel length 30.3/4″. Caliber 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser. 5 shot internal magazine with Mauser bolt system. The breech marked in the usual way; “WAFFENFABRIK / MAUSER / OBERDORF A/N /1900” The factory inspectors initials that appear on the action wall next to the serial number are those of “O.G.” – Captain Olof Gibson inspector at the Carl Gustafs Factory who oversaw inspection of the rifles as they arrived from Germany between 1898 and 1902.
Full length Walnut stock with finger grooved fore end. Excellent armourers repair to the underside of the wrist when a chunk seems to have departed from the stock. Adjacent to the repair clear Swedish crown inspectors stamps. The furthest down being the crowned “S” for the Stockholm. Otherwise the stock is in fine condition with the usual scattering of dents and dings from military service. All stock fittings blued, the butt plate still retaining a firey blue with matching number. The other fittings mixed numbers. The stock disc positioned on the RHS of the butt gives indication of bore condition.
The action and barrel have a strong blue about them with little wear. The bolt, the magazine follower and cleaning rod are finished in the white and are well polished with no corrosion. The straight-arm bolt assembly has matching numbers all over. The action is superbly smooth. There is a fine checkering pattern on the cocking piece and the safety flag. It is a pleasure just to work the bolt. Standard ladder rear sights and fixed blade fore-sight. The Swedish crown inspectors mark appears on many parts.
A nice standard Swede from Mauser production still doing what it was designed for 112 years after it was built.
