A Genuine Swedish Target M96 Rifle with Soderin Appuature Sights
This is one of the early Mauser built model 1896 rifles which has been selected for conversion to a Target version. The rifle has all the standard M96 features with some important later modifications. It remains chambered in the standard Swedish caliber of 6.5 x 55. It has the conventional straight handled Mauser bolt system with five shot internal magazine. It is still a full length rifle with conventional woodwork with one addition. Mounted between the rear trigger guard tang and the rear sling swivel mount is a wooden pistol grip on a rail. This can be positioned as the shooter requires with a little work. At present it is set in a fairly conventional catch-all position. This helps position the trigger hand nicely.
The breech is marked; “WAFFENFABRIK / MAUSER / OBERNDORF A/N / 1899” The breech is finished, as is most of the rifle, in a rich strong armoury blue. The side wall of the action bears the initials of the Officer in Charge for inspection at the factory it arrived at in Sweeden. “G.F” Gustaf Fredenberg was Cheif Inspection officer at the Carl Gustafs Factory from 1897 until 1902. This period covers the date on the breech. It is followed by the serial number “32081”.
Mounted on the rear bridge of the action is the technical part of this rifle. This is the Soderin Micrometer Diopter sight. Soderin was the designer. The sight is securely gunsmith mounted behind the bolt. It is fully adjustable for windage and elevation to extremely precise increments. Elevation is adjusted by turns of the graduated disk on top of the unit. Windage is affected by adjustment to the dial on the side of the unit. One turns the wheel in the direction of the “H” for right and “V” for the left. There is a datum point for both adjustments. The accuracy achievable through these sights is impressive, coupled with the interchangeable front sight element mounted in a “tunnel” this becomes a very accurate rifle indeed. Even the rear ladder sight has the later version of the “Vasteras” micrometer sight installed.
Otherwise this rifle displays all the traits of a high quality Swedish Mauser. Excellent hardwood stock which has an very pleasing intact finish, with only one or two dings from its life. All the components which should match do. They all carry the last three digits of the serial number. Edge wear to all blued parts is minimal. The most noticeable loss of finish is externally, on the bridge of the rear sight – the part which protrudes the most. Adjustment within the rear sight is fully achievable. The action is smooth, the bore excellent. Swedish crown inspectors marks are on all the usual components. The bolt is in fine condition and polished bright. The magazine follower and cleaning rod are also in the white. Cleaning rod numbers do not match.
