A Good Clean World War I period Model 1896 Infantry Rifle
This is the Mauser adopted by Sweden in caliber 6.5 x 55mm. It has a 5-shot internal magazine which can be stripper clip loaded from above. The sprung clip is held in position by grooves in the front of the rear action bridge. The Mauser bolt system uses a straight handled bolt with a flag safety to the rear. All components are numbered to the rifle.
The serial number is stamped clearly into the action wall, “315456.” Records show that number puting production as the Carl Gustafs factory, Sweden in the year 1913 which ties in with the markings on the receiver. Just in front of the serial number are the initials “Y.T.” The Chief Inspector of Arms in the factory that time was Frans Yngve Tellander. He held that position from 1911 until 1914.
The receiver is marked with the “Swedish Crown / Carl Gustafs logo / CARL GUSTAFS STADS / GEVARSFAKTORI / 1913” The action is nicely blued (possibly reblued) and the bolt is finished in the white. The bolt’s main components are all marked with the last three digits of the serial number. Also present and stamped into the surfaces horizontally are the Swedish crown inspection marks. The magazine follower is also in the white and has one of the larger crowns stamped upon its flat surface. The bolt release catch is numbered “456” and is held in position at the rear RHS of the action with a single screw. The spring on the outside of the catch is of a pleasing nitre-blue.
The rear sights are ramp like and when laying down are graduated from 300 to 600 meters. In the upright or ladder position the sights are graduated from 700 to 2000 meters. The main spring for the sights has a very strong nitre-blue colour to it. All components of the rear sight are numbered to the rifle. The barrel still retains an excellent blued finish with very little erosion to the colour. The muzzle is stepped down but not threaded. The cleaning rod is in position but is numbered to another rifle. Front sights are open. The two barrel bands are held in position by two sprung clips, they are finished in a vivid blue. Both bands correctly numbered.
The stock looks to be a walnut type. It runs full length under the rifle, apart from the last 4.3/4,” where the barrel is exposed. the stock has been machined with full length finger grooves in either side of the fore-end. It is an extremely fine wood which holds edge definition well and has a pleasing orange quality to it. There are a few dings, dents and discolourations over whole thing. Under is the trigger guard and magazine floor plate. The later being , once again numbered to the gun. The RHS of the butt-stock has the bore condition plate in place by a single screw. A steel butt-plate with tang and matching number is in place at the back end of the butt. Between the trigger guard and the rear sling swivel is another stamp of the Swedish crown.
The action is exceptional for a 99 year old rifle and cycles perfectly well. The bore is superb condition.
These are fine rifles to shoot and I would also like to be so bold as to recommend them for the Lady Shooters as recoil is very much more manageable. ( I do not wish to offend so please excuse me if I have. )
