Swedish M96 Infantry Rifle….SOLD
Created on June 18th 2014
A good example of an M96 Swedish Mauser
The Swedish Model 1896 Rifle in 6.5 x 55mm. Mauser action with flag safety and five shot internal magazine. The rifle is 49.1/2″ in total length. The barrel is 29″ long and the trigger pull length is 13.7/8″ ( 350mm) The action and barrel are blued and the bolt and magazine follower finished in the white.
The receiver is marked with the “Swedish Crown / C.G. logo / CARL GUSTAFS STADS / GEVARSFAKTORI / 1919″ The sidewall of the action is marked with “H.K. – 471909” H.K. are the factory inspectors initials who ultimately passed the rifle when it was completed; Helge Gustaf Ludvig Kolthoff was Besikningsofficer from 1912 to 1923. The serial number puts production in the year 1919.
The condition of the action is good, considering its age it is very good with only the mildest edge wear. The last three digits of the serial number are repeated on the bolt release catch. Again the digits “909” are repeated on the bolt knob, the bolt shroud and the flag safety. The bright finish of the bolt against the” blue” of the action gives these rifles a very smart appearance. There is a muzzle thread protector in position.
Blueing on the barrel is in fine condition. The finish is however starting to fade to grey on other components like the barrel bands, and the trigger guard. The two barrel bands are numbered “909” as is the tang of the steel butt plate. The other markings that appear on this rifle are the Swedish crown inspectors marks. The magazine floor plate is numbered to another rifle as are the rather nice rear sights. Numbered to another rifle, the rear sights are in fine condition with excellent colour in the main spring and some case colour hardening in the slide. They are graduated from 3 to 600 meters when “down.” From 700 to 2000 meters when upright in the ladder position.
Working the action on these rifles is a pleasure, this one is no exception. The rifle cycles and performs well. The bore is in very good, bright condition with no interruption to the strong sharp rifling. The full length finger grooved stock is in excellent condition with a modern protective finish. There are very few dings or dents in the stock. It is fitted with the usual brass bore condition disk. This rifle would be a handsome addition to any military rifle collection and at the same time, the caliber is easy to reload and comfortable to shoot.
