Swedish Gevar m/96-38……………..(f 532) SOLD
Created on January 9th 2016
A good clean example on the Swedish M/96-38 shortened rifle
Still chambered in the extremely accurate 6.5 x 55 caliber, with a 5-shot internal magazine. Serial number 324728 fully matching on all marked components. This is one of 30,000 rifles to be taken into the Carl Gustafs Factory just before the beginning of the Second World War for re-barreling. They were long rifles that had their original long barrels removed and a replacement 24.5″ barrel fitted.
This rifle is stocked in an original m/96 stock which has been shortened at the forend by the factory. It has the usual 7″ finger groves on either side, a separate hand-guard over the barrel and the usual stock furniture. The butt-plate was originally blued but has lost all its colour. The tang has the last three numbers of the serial number stamped on it as do the mid-band and the front-band. The trigger guard is unmarked but the magazine floor plate also carries the last three digits. The butt-stock has the usual brass bore condition disk mounted on the RHS displaying the condition at last inspection.
The front sight is a normal pointer type and the rear a tangent type. The rear sight has a vivid nitre-blue spring and elevator fitted. All the separate components of that sight are numbered to the rifle. The sight is marked clearly with a capital “T” ( torpedam.) This indicates which ammunition this rifle and sight were specifically designed for. The ammo that this rifle is calibrated for is the m/94/41 139 grain spire point bullet. For accurate shooting of the other type of ammunition available at the time there were adjustment tables usually fitted on the butt. At the time that this rifle was in service there should have been a chart attached to the butt, behind the brass disk, that allowed the soldier to make adjustments for hold-over. It is obviously now absent. The sight is graduated from 200 to 600 meters in the laying flat.
The receiver is clearly marked as follows: “Swedish Crown / CG / CARL GUSTAFS STADS / GEVARSFAKTORI. / 1913.” 1913 is the build date of the original m/96 long rifle. On the action side wall, reading in the normal fashion from left to right is; ” Y T” followed by the full serial number “324728”. “Y.T” was the officer in charge of inspection assigned to the plant. Y.T was Yngve Tellander and he was there from October 1911 to September 1914. Looking from the LHS of the action there are strong Swedish crown inspection marks on many components like the bolt release catch which also shows nitre-blues in its spring.
The bolt is finished in the white and polished – all parts matching and stands out against the strong black of the actions finish. It still has its straight bolt handle from its life as an m/96. The safety catch and cocking piece are both checkered with a regular square check to add extra grip. All the parts marked with the Swedish crown acceptance stamp are horizontally stamped which is correct fro the Carl Gustafs Factory.
The stock and hand-guard are of close grained dark walnut with a pleasing patina to finish. They both display some dents and marks from military usage but nothing that would cause concern to the military rifle shooter or collector. The action is fine and the bore is excellent. The rifle is equipped with two sling swivels and a bright finished cleaning rod.
