Swedish Gevar M1896 Rifle…………….SOLD

Created on November 2nd 2012

Model 1896 Long Rifle made by Mauser Oberndorf

Because of delays in shipping of machinery from Ludwig Loewe in Berlin, Mauser produced these fine rifles for two years at their Oberndorf plant for the Swedish goverment.  Between 1899 and 1900 they produced a relatively short run of approximately 38,600 rifles.  This rifle lands right in that serial number range at  28211 for 1899.

The nicely blued breech is marked as follows;  “WAFFENFABRIK / MAUSER / OBERNDORF A/N  / 1899”.  The serial number 28211 and the inspectors initials “G.F” (Gustaf Fredenberg) are on the action side wall.   All other parts which are marked carry only the last three digits of the serial number, namely 211.  The bright bolt handle knob, the bolt shroud, the safety, the cocking piece and the bolt release catch are all numbered thus.

This is the 6.5mm caliber rifle,  with a five shot internal magazine.  There is a cut-out in the action wall which helps the user easily push home the rounds loaded by stripper clip. This m96 is 49.1/2″ in overall length.  It has a blued 29″ barrel with a stepped muzzle which accommodates the the all steel bayonet, if fitted.  The cleaning rod and magazine follower are  the only other components finished in polished white .  They contrast nicely with the good blue finish.

The Swedish Imperial crown is stamped on many components as final inspection mark.  Most noticeably the magazine follower. The rear sights are graduated to 2000 meters when up. They are also marked with a large crown marking and are marked with “211” on all parts.

One piece Walnut stock with hand-guard over the barrel.  The stock has finger grooves in the fore end and a brass bore condition disc on the side of the butt.  Is also marked under the wrist with a single “crowned CB”  which is the armourers  inspector mark at the Karlsborgs plant ( old spelling “Carlsborg”).   All the blued stock fittings are marked with the matching digits of the serial number, including the magazine floor plate.

The bore is excellent.  The mainspring inside the bolt, still has that pleasing ability if opened when unfired, to propel the bolt backwards and open its self,  if one just eases the handle up past the locking point.

A good collectible early Swedish Mauser where everything matches except the cleaning rod, this is quite common.  On dismantling for submission to proof it was noticed that the stocks are correctly numbered to the gun.

Stock code;  f 295   Bandoleer not included in sale price.
