A rarely encountered version of the Swedish Target Rifle

DSC_0496

This Swedish Target rifle is chambered in 6.5 x 55mm and was know as the M/6.  All these rifles were based on the standard Mauser action used for the M94 Carbine and M96 standard military rifle.  Carl Gustafs developed this rifle to compete around the world.  Using the original Swedish action the barrel was replaced with a heavier barrel.   This heavier barrel was free floating and the twist rate was altered a small amount.  It was changed from the standard one turn in 200mm to one turn in 220mm.  The heavy barrel is 29.1/8″ in length and starts at 19mm diameter tapering to 17.5mm.  The rifle is an overall 49″ in length.  The trigger pull length is 13.1/2″.

The stock is of a particular design incorporating a cheek piece on both sides, allowing both left and right handed shooters to use it.  It also has a comfortable pistol grip and a “grippy” rubber butt pad with a crown under “C” for Carl Gustafs.  The stock is a good grade European walnut with only one small chip showing on the RHS beside the receiver.  The stock is equipped with three sling swivels, an extra Parker-Hale type being provided on the front of the trigger guard floor plate.  The fore-end nose-cap is a quick release type.

The receiver is marked as follows: “Crown over CG  / CARL GUSTAFS STADS / GEVARSFAKTORI / 1899.”  1899 being the original date of manufacture.  On the side wall of the action are the original factory inspectors initials of  “O.G” being Olof Gibson, Chief Weapons inspector at Carl Gustafs from 1898 until 1902.  Also on the side wall is the early four figure serial number of 7794.  Records confirm manufacture within the second year of production 1899.  Directly to the right of these marks are additional marks not usually seen on the military rifles, the first is a Swedish crown over a “C” over the numerals 69.  This is the mark found on all the converted rifles produced from the Carl Gustafs plant with the year of conversion at the bottom, 1969.  Finally, once again to the right of that marking, is a clear rune symbol – indicating that after conversion, the rifle has been pressure tested again.

The bolt is fully matching but, unusually, the straight arm of the bolt has been turned down (aftermarket.)  The M/6 was never fitted with conventional sights as the M96 but, instead, the rear sights are the Soderin type; a highly adjustable aperture type.  To compliment these the front sight has a tunnel aperture sight with replaceable inserts.  At present there is a tapered post insert in position.  The trigger is serrated for extra grip.  The outside surface of the trigger guard is also knurled to provide extra grip if required in the hold position.  On the RHS of the butt are two very small holes and the shadow of what looks to have been a presentation plate, which has been removed.

In general, a rifle in good condition with complete rifling devoid of pitting or misting in its original stock. Finish of the stock is good.  The most noticeable wear to the bluing over the entirety of the rifle is on the body of the Soderin sights.  An opportunity to acquire one of the best Swedish Mausers ever produced and hone your target shooting skills.
