Interesting Gerard Scoped M96
A fine and interesting scoped M96 in the fashion of the M41. Standard base rifle, chambered in the Sweedish 6.5 x 55mm round with a five shot internal magazine. Mauser build by Car Gustafs from 1901. The bolt is blued in the conventional “Sniper-type” way with turned down bolt handle. There are other features which indicate M41 which will be listed later. Overall, the rifle measures 49.3/8″ in length. The round blued barrel is 29″ long and the Trigger Pull is 14″ to centre.
The rifles serial number is covered by the side-rail lower applied to the side of the action but is repeated on the outer of the mount, reading “97567.” This serial number itself indicates production in 1901. This is further confirmed by the markings on the receiver ring; “Crowned CG motif / CARL GUSTAFS STADS / GEVARSFAKTORI / 1901.” Straight wrist single piece finger grooved walnut stock with handguard over the barrel. On the underside of the wrist are three clear crown impressions the last being over an “S.” The brass stock disc indicating bore condition is in place on the RHS of the buttstock. Steel butt-plate with long tang, the numbers not matching.
Other furniture on the stock is also not matching. Removable magazine base plate and trigger guard both with good black finish. The bolt assembly does match the rifle’s serial number and is all blacked. The rear sights are the replacement m/55 type with three Crown marking on the top surface. Good adjustment by the rotating wheel; the sight being marked “”S.M. / sikte /m/55” being graduated from 1 to 6. Sprung steel sight cover in position over fore sight. White metal full-length cleaning rod in position under barrel.
The wood stocks show wear which would be from a life as a military piece but not to a level of detriment. The lower base of the mount is applied to the action wall by three screws and two pins the screws being punched to avoid becoming lose. Recoil stop bolt and locking nut to front of mount. The upper is an “Accumount” reproduction with lever to the side. The scope is a fixed magnification model marked on the eyepiece as “GERARD” with a 30mm object lens and German No’ 1 Post and Cross hair reticule. Slight adjustment may be needed for the reticule as the author can’t finely focus to his eyes! But that may be something to do with my age! Elevation adjustment functions correctly and the tower is numbered under the wheel as “49262.” Windage adjustment through rear of upper mount by adjustment screw. Image through the scope is good. Next keeper might like to have the scope serviced. Bolt arm clears scope. Reproduction brown leather scope covers. Action mechanically fine. Bore is strong with continual rifling, possibly dark within grooves but otherwise fine.
This is a good entry point to scoped Swedish Mauser shooting and a classically elegant looking rifle. BNP Proofed recently on import.
