A good example of the M41B Swedish Sniper
A fine example of the famous M41 B post war Swedish Sniper Rifle. A stroke of brilliance from the originator who brought the best long rifle around at the time together with the best optics available and produced a weapon that became known as “The Arctic Predator” The accuracy obtainable by these rifle is really impressive when lined up against its contemporaries. The amalgamation of the separate components of the M41B ends in a no miss result. The 6.5 x 55 Swedish round performs very well, coupled with steady accuracy of the M96 rifle with its long barrel, the perfection of the Swedish engineering of the time and the excellent reliable quality of the Ajack optics makes this a formidable combination to beat.
The Rifle is a selected Model 1896 Mauser made at the Carl Gustafs factory in 1915. Chambered in 6.5 Swedish. Overall length 49.1/2″. Barrel length 29″. Five shot Mauser action with integral magazine. The bolt is blued with a curved handle. The magazine floor plate and the cleaning rod are finished in the white, the rest of the metal components on the rifle are all blued. The rifle has been fitted with the correct micrometer adjustable open rear sights specified at the time of the conversion, they are marked “S M / sikte / m/55” They are also marked with the Three Swedish Crowns. The front sight hood is the correct sprung steel type, fitted to prevent knocks in the field. Many parts of the rifle also carry the Swedish crown inspection stamps. The finger-grooved stock is of the light colored hardwood type with an inspection mark of a “crowned S” under the wrist, there are few dents or scratches on the woodwork , it has survived well. There is a brass bore condition disk set into the side of the butt, this may not be original to the rifle.
The breech is marked; “C & G entwined cypher /Carl Gustafs Stads/ Gevarsfaktori /1915.” The serial number on the action side wall is concealed by the mount but the number has been transferred onto the mount and is 364247. The bolt assembly carries the last three numbers of the serial number on all components.
The base mount for the scope is attached by two steel pins, and three screws all set in position by drilling and punching. The base has the later addition recoil stop at the front to stop movement by recoil of the scope. The mating part of the mount which slides onto the rail is also numbered with the full serial number to avoid mix ups. On the posts there are three digit armorers’ assembly marks to avoid mix ups in reassembly.
The scope is marked up as “AJACK 4 x 90” on the ranging tower. On the other side is “a crown mark, Nr 0909 / 1941B”. The ranging dial that sits on top is graduated from 100 to 800 meters. The optics are fine, the reticule is the standard German post and rail type. Windage is obtained by adjustment on the rear of the mount. The side rail locking system consists of a large lever on the side on the mount which pulls the scope into position once it has been fully slid into position. This locking system acts upon a pin attached to the base attached to the action, binding the two together extremely efficiently. The scope has a dioptric adjustment at the rear, in front of the eyepiece which will adjust from -3 to+3, this is under a piece of rubber tubing assembled onto the scope to stop water ingress. With the scope there are a nice set of original leather lens covers.
The scope comes with its tin, which will hold the scope and the mount. It seems to have the serial number of the rifle on the lid. All leather straps and fastenings are attached to the tin by rivets, and the is a leather liner inside the tin to accommodate the mount.
A rare animal these days !
