M1896 Long Rifle Swedish Mauser……………..SOLD
Created on November 9th 2011
An extremely fine version of the M96 Swedish Mauser long rifle.
Full length M96 with attractive striped pale walnut stock in excellent condition. Serial number 338606 on many parts. Overall length 49.5/8″. Barrel length 29″. Trigger to butt center (pull) 14″. 6.5 x 55 caliber, 5 shot magazine.
The straight hand bolt matches the rifle and many other components. The bolt has the last three digits of the serial number on many of its components. Once taken down it was observed that the rifles serial number was stamped into the inside of the woodwork top and bottom. The serial number matches date information from the factory. The breech is marked with the manufacturers name and the year as follows; “CARL GUSTAFS STADS / GEVARSFAKTORI / 1915” adjacent to the serial number on the side of the action is the final inspectors initials “H.K”. Helge Kolthoff was inspection officer at the factory from 1912 to 1923.
The bolt is finished in the “white” the rest of the rifles metalwork has been blued, which has survived remarkably well, with only high edge wear as noticable. The magazine floor plate is also in the white with a polished finish and a superb crown inspectors mark. Many other Swedish inspectors crowns appear on other components of the rifle. The barrel bands and the cleaning rod are from another rifle but in perfect order. The steel butt plate tang bears the 606 and a crown.
The simple ramp sights are graduated to 600 meters in the horizontal position and then go up to 2000 meters standing upright. Their components are numbered as the butt plate is and also show a beautiful nitre blue on the spring parts. The bore is very good and the action as slick as they get. It really is a pleasant experience just closing the bolt, let alone reaping the results of careful considered shooting. This is a Sweed living up to reputation, as expected.
