Excellent Carl Gustafs M96 1900 built Rifle with Soderin Sights
Of standard long rifle Gevar M/96 specifications in a beech stock but fitted with the excellent Soderin micrometer diopter sights. These will only serve to improve what is a basically highly accurate rifle. The rifle was produced at the Carl Gustafs factory in only the second full year for the factory of production, after taking over from Mauser Oberndorf.
The rifle, as an Infantry weapon, is the full length of 49.1/2. The round finely blued barrel is 28.3/4″ in length from the stepped muzzle to the breech face. The trigger pull is 14″ to centre. Condition of the barrel and action looks to be almost perfect with very little appreciable wear – with no visible high edge wear. The steel matching numbered butt-plate is finished in the white but all other components are also strongly blued. The bolt and magazine follower are finished in the white, as is the full length cleaning rod in position underneath the fore-end.
The rifle carries the Crowned C/G motif on the receiver with the following underneath; “CARL GUSTAFS STADS / GEVARSFAKTORI / 1900” On the RHS of the action wall are the weapons inspector Officers initials of “O.G.” and the serial number “73443.” The officers name was Olof Gibson, who held the position known as “Besiktningsofficer” between 1898 and 1902.
The bolt is marked in all the normal places with the last three digits of the serial number, also carrying the correct crown acceptance mark of the Carl Gustafs plant. The magazine floorplate also carries the correct number, however, as is often the case the numbers of the rear sight and the two front bands differ.
Behind the trigger guard, on the underside of the wrist, are three stock markings; a double crown inspection mark over the crowned “S” showing inspection after rework at Stockholm’s Tygstation. – possibly when the dioptre sights were fitted. Tygstation was an Army workshop. Twin sling swivels fitted held in place by finely blued flat springs.
Standard ladder rear sights with good degree of strong blue remaining. Tunnel front sight for interchangeable front sight elements. The adjustment on the rear Soderin unit is good with positive hold and adjustment through both planes. These sights alone can fetch a fair amount these days. The bore is good with no pitting or corrosion for its entire length. The action is mechanically fine with strong resistance from the main spring on closing the bolt. This rifle, once familiarised with, will bring in the competition results. Chambered in 6.5 x 55 Swedish with a five shot internal magazine, the rifle can be clip fed. The calibre is forgiving and can be shot without discomfort setting in, which is a positive bonus in military rifle shooting. Carries current British Nitro Proofs.
