Fine Norwegian Model 1894 Krag Jorgensen Rifle

If you appreciated the Krag-Jorgensen design at all – this is the one to get.  Thought to be the best of all the variants produced – both for calibre choice and design features.  Also, by the time this design was put into production steel was at a pinnacle as far as quality was concerned.  This is the Model 1894, similar to both the US Springfield version and the Danish types, this had all the creases ironed out.  To start with it is not an over large bulky rifle and thankfully had lost the ugly barrel cooling jacket of the Danish version.

Initially the whole design cancept was a rifle that could still be loaded whilst a round was in the chamber with the bolt closed.  The side opening magazine accomplished this and because it folded outward it acted almost like a tray to “catch” rounds and avoid them falling to the ground unsupported, as the Danish forward hinged version did.  Secondly, along with the improvements in steel production came a stronger bolt lock up mechanism.  There are two lugs which are turned into a seat to secure the front end but, additionally a strengthening rib runs along the body of the bolt, locking into position infront of the rear action. Finally the bolt arm stub also rests against the rear of the action body when closed.

This particular M1894 was built in 1909 (date on receiver ring) with the weapons factory rampant lion mark of Kongsberg, Norway above it.  Two clear Norwegian proof marks show on the crest of the reciver.  The serial number “85392” is on the LHS of the receiver ring and the last three digits on the bolt stub upper.  The body of the bolt is in the white – the action still in a strong original blue.  The rear of the bolt has a flag safety arrangement and there is a magazine cut-off switch at the rear LHS of the single fluted action.  Round cocking piece to rear of bolt.  Action superbly smooth – just as a Krag should be.  At some point a rear aperture sight has been fitted to the RHS of the action.  This has left three screws in position between the bolt cut-out and the magazine flap at the rear RHS.  We have deccided to leave as is, incase another sight is fitted at a later date.  Stock crudely let away to allow for sight (could be improved)

Otherwise, the rifle is as standard manufacture for the M1894.  It has escaped most modifications except the rear sight has been up-graded to the 2200 meters later version. The two barrel bands have non-matching numbers.  The rifle is fully stocked with a semi-pistol grip European Walnut stock and half-length hand guard,  Steel butt-plate with trap for cleaning equipment.  Correct half length steel blued cleaning rod stored under barrel.  Full length bayonet fitting bar under barrel.  Sling mounting points but no swivels (this is because of the type of sling mount used)  Finger grove fore-end stock in original finish, showing all the normal but not excessive evidence of a military life.  The exposed barrel shows the most wear to finish as does the trigger guard.  Trigger serrated.  Bore dark but complete with strong rifling, CIP proofed.

The rifle measures 50″ in overall length.  The barrel is 30″ long and the trigger Pull is 14″ to centre.  5 Shot magazine capacity in 6.5 x 55mm. A rare and difficult rifle to get hold on in this configuration and most certainly one for the military rifle collector to add to his Historic Shooting Collection.
