An Interesting and complete Czech Model 1898/22 Mauser

This is the first rifle adopted for service by the Army of the newly formed state of Czechoslovakian after WWI.  In practical terms this Model the 1898/22 was based upon the Mexican Model 1912.  Produced between 1924 and 1930 before the shorter carbine models became the norm.  Produced by the Czech National arms manufactory, these rifles were ordered by many countries and have provided good service ever since, especially with some rebel groups who still use them to this day!  One of the biggest contracts, which seems to apply to this rifle, was from Turkey.  A hint to this being the Farsi numerals and a faint star cartouche just below the rear sling mount.

The majority of these fine long rifles were chambered in 7.92mm x 57, as is this example.  The rifle has a straight bolt handled Mauser action with flag safety to the bolt rear.  A five-shot staggered internal magazine with clip-feed cut-out, to front of rear action bridge.  Overall the rifle is 49.1/4″ in length.  The round barrel which was blued measures a nominal 29.1/4″ in length.  The trigger pull to center is a standard 13″.  Fully stocked in a dark walnut stock with a hand guard which covers the barrel from the receiver ring to just beyond the mid-barrel band. The stock is in good condition with an armoury dove-tail repair (or strengthening operation) in two places.  One timber dovetail has been inserted behind the rear action screw, on top of the wrist.  The second such repair is on the front of the handguard, just behind the barrel band.

Other features of the stock include a flat steel butt-plate, a steel bolt strip-down disc transversely mounted through the stock.  The trigger guard and magazine floor plate are steel milled parts.  The forward section of the trigger-plate has the matching serial number stamped into it and a clear circled “Z”.  Steel milled barrel bands and bayonet boss with H-shaped front band, held in place by springs.  The bayonet boss has the drilling to store the cleaning rod which is in place.  The stock has a pistol grip and the Gew 98 type WW 1 rear sling swivel mount.

The serial number; “A 9864”  is stamped into the LHS of the receiver ring.  On the crest are the manufacturers details which read as follows; “CS. ST. / ZBROJOVKA / BRNO.”  The receiver still retains some blued finish but the majority of that finish is lacking on other parts, such as the barrel.  The bolt looks to have been finished in the white and has the serial numbers on the bolt stub. Locking screws are present in the main action screws.  The mechanical action of the rifle is good and the bore is remarkably good. It is bright with strong rifling and no apparent pitting or misting.

This is an unusual rifle to find in such fine condition and also, not a rifle present in most serious Military, Bolt-Action rifle collections.
