Superb Example of the Model 1909 Cavalry Carbine
Produced by DWM in Germany at the same time as the Rifle of same Model designation, these are purpose built carbines from the ground up. A distinctively handsome rifle on sight most noticeable for the full length woodwork and bright finished action. Full stocked in a handsome dark hardwood with straight grip wrist and half length hand-guard over the barrel, terminating in a guarded front sight, which will still take the fitment of a bayonet. The nose-cap is counterbored giving the appearance of a larger calibre.
The 1909 Cavalry Carbine is chambered in the 7.65 x 53mm round. It has an internal staggered flush fitting magazine which can be charger fed. It is a classic Mauser design with a curved bolt handle and classic Mauser safety flag-system to the rear of the bolt. The bolt release catch is slightly different in appearance in that it extends up toward the charger guide to allow extra purchase to open the catch. The main receiver ring is marked with the Argentine crest and the model designation “EJERCITO ARGENTINO / MAUSER MOD.1909” on the LHS just at the woodwork line. Adjacent, on the outer action wall are the manufacturers initials; “D.G.F.M. – (F.M.A.P.) On the other side of the receiver ring is the serial number “001998”. The serial number also appears on the floor plate frame of the magazine beneath. The stub for the bolt handle also has the numerals “998” stamped into its upper surface.
Action and bolt are finished in polished white steel and contrast smartly against the dark timber and the blued components of the balance of the rifle. The safety flag (catch) has the shaking hands emblem on the underside and is visible when the safety is fully applied and the bolt locked. The butt plate is a steel ovoid flat item and the rifle has side mounted sling swivels. The front 8.3/4″ of barrel are exposed and blued. The rifle is 42.1/4″ in overall length. The round barrel is 22.1/2″ long. The trigger pull is 13″ to centre. The rear sight is graduated to 1400 meters and has a tiny Anchor stamped into the upper face could this be a nautical connection; say the Marines ?
The bore is strong and clean with uninterrupted rifling and the action feels almost as strong and smooth as a Carl Gustafs 6.5! This is an unusual rifle to seem on this side of the world and a rare opportunity to fill a missing item in the great Mauser development story.
