.50-60 Peabody Rim-Fire Rifle — SOLD
Created on November 28th 2008
Martini-Action Rim-Fire .50-60 cal Rim-Fire Militia Rifle.
Produced in approximately 1866 in two lengths – carbine and rifle this is the later with three barrel bands and a full length 36″ barrel. The barrel is plain with a stepped folding sight at the rear. Remarkably the bore is perfect. This is no exaggeration, the rifling is crisp, there is no deteriation of the bore due to rust at all and no pitting, it is bright and clean. As good as the day it was made.
The exterior of the weapon has an even all over dark patina with no signs of disturbance. The stock has minor dents and scratches but is not split or fractured in any way. Most of the wear looks as if it has been there a long time.
The evenly coloured plumb brown/grey action is stamped “MAN’F’D BY / PROVIDENCE TOOL COo. / PROV R.I.” on the right side. On the left side it is stamped “PEABODYS’ PAT. JULY.22 1862”. The underlever doubles as a trigger guard.
Plain back-action lock and hammer. Dark full length American Black Walnut Stock and fore-end. The stock is stamped on the right (hammer side) “CM” possibly for Canadian Militia. Sling loops, steel butt plate and ramrod. This Peabody also comes with the correct socket bayonet. A fine and unusual rifle which will compliment any serious collection
