Arisaka Type 38 Carbine in 6.5mm

World War Two Japanese Type 38 Carbine in 6.5mm

Standard features apply to this Arisaka Type 38 carbine.  It is 38″ long overall.  The barrel is 19″ long.  It has the standard Mauser type action with round-headed straight handled bolt and 5 shot internal magazine.  The action and barrel appear to be re-blued.  Although very good, the finish on the magazine floor plate and trigger guard are judged to be original but are failing.

The action carries the Imperial Chrysanthemum and the Japanese characters for Type 38.  The side wall of the action has the markings for the arsenal (the three interlinked circles of the Kokura Arsenal) The serial number, 84271 and a circle containing a crude square.

The finish of the bolt is known as being in the white, i.e. polished steel.  The end cap of the bolt head is machine engraved with a geometric pattern.  The bolt handle is blued and the stem of the bolt carries the last three digits of the serial number.  The magazine follower is also in the white.  Plain cupped steel butt-plate.  Side mounted sling attachment on the butt stock with side mounted mount on the barrel band.  Under the butt-stock is a repair filling in, with timber, another point where a sling mount was situated.  This looks to have been done when the weapon was in service.  Cleaning rod A/F.

Short ladder rear sight graduated to 4 from 20.  The stock although looking battered is actually in good condition, there are no cracks or splits.  The finish is even all over with staining in many places.  On the RHS, next to the action, beside the breech, is the water drain-off indent, this was a measure designed to combat the extremely damp conditions these rifles operated in.  Overall, this carbine gives a strong impression of having seen service.  The horizontal line, clearly seen from the side view in the butt-stock, is the join between the two pieces of timber they always used in the manufacture of these stocks.  The for-end nose cap has a bayonet lug.  Just behind the nose-cap, on the end of the hand-guard is another repair to the woodwork.

Although this little carbine may look a little battered from first inspection , it is actually in good condition.  It has an excellent bore and a smooth action.  It has been British proofed and is ready to be put through its paces once again.
