Excellent byf /1941 K98 Rifle with Zielvier scope
A fine representation using many genuine parts of the much feared K98 war-time scoped rifle. The chosen rifle is a 1941 byf production Mauser K98 with matching numbers. The bolt could be forced matched. Chambered in 7.92mm (8mm) Mauser. Mauser bolt action rifle with internal 5-shot magazine, bent bolt handle and flag safety. Fine solid walnut Luftwaffe stock; so marked on RHS of butt stock between butt-plate and bolt strip-down disc. The stock has another rifle number stamped into the underside of the butt-stock. Correct steel cupped butt-plate. The stock is in excellent condition with very few visible marks showing a service life. The surface has an all-over smooth finish almost free of damage.
The rifle is 43.1/4″ in overall length. The round blued barrel is 23.1/2″ long and trigger pull is 13″ to centre. All metal components are displaying a fine degree of finish with deep gloss blues. All numbered parts are matching. Once again this is a ground-up build undertaken by Ed Silva from Miltech in the US. It then went to Thames Valley Guns in the UK, who fitted the “Huber” Two stage match service trigger and bedded the stock. Much attention has been applied to tuning this into a highly accurate war-time Sniper rifle. One can feel in the action, the obvious improvements by just by cycling the bolt.
The mount is a reproduction Short Side Rail in two parts with a base which stays on the rifle and a quick release top half. All the correct parts have been numbered to further reinforce the feeling of the genuine article. The scope is a genuine Carl Zeiss fixed magnification ( x4) “Zielever” scope with a serial number (11443) There is a single elevation adjustment drum with brass locking screw centrally mounted on top of the scope. Rubber eye-piece (reproduction) and a twin cap leather set of lens caps marked “K.A.HUDDLE” on the inside.
The mount has the correct three main fixing screws and three domed slotted locking screws plus two fixing pins applied to the action outer wall. LHS of the receiver is marked with a clear Eagle/Swastika marking and the full serial number which is “5406 / ff”. Crest of the receiver ring is marked with the manufacturers code “byf / 41.” “byf” stands for Mauser Oberndorf and the numbers for the year of completion. RHS of the receiver has three clear waffenamts over the number 655. There are multiple inspection and acceptance stamps on the rifle as a whole and they are all clear enough to read. The rifle has the correct milled front band. It is fitted with the usual side mounting for the sling system. There is a leather K-type sling with the rifle. Correct cleaning rod stored under the barrel. The front sight has the hood in place. The magazine floor plate is the correct milled type and is matching as is the trigger guard. Mechanically very fine. The bore is in good strong condition with a good depth to the rifling. Optics on the scope are excellent with a three post reticule.
It would be hard to improve on this rifle apart from finding a surviving genuine sniper. Yet even those have to be viewed with some suspicion. With this rifle you know what you are getting. You know where it was built and that no expense has been spared. Its a very safe way of buying a German Sniper rifle without having to convince yourself that you have not been hoodwinked in any way. Freshly UK CIP proofed this month (July 2021)
