Mauser K98 Rifle by Lubecker – Berlin for 1941……..(F 1139) SOLD

Berlin – Lubecker produced K98 Mauser for 1941

Of standard 1941 production specifications for Berlin Lubecker Maschinenfabrik ; blued finish in polished laminated stock.  Chambered in 7.92 x 57mm with Mauser action and 5-shot internal magazine.  Overall the rifle is 43.1/2″ long.  The round blued barrel is 24″ long and the trigger Pull is 13.1/8″ to centre.  Mauser bolt system with flag safety to rear.  This is the sturdy WW2 rifle at the side of most Wermacht soldiers of the conflict – a classic in rifle design and practicle build which nearly won them the War.

This example of the famous K98 is in very good condition and that includes the bore.  The serial number on the bolt does not match, but it does have the correct number of digits and most noticeably the exact same suffix form of gothic lower-case “g.”  I have seen many mixed number battlefield surrendered rifles and the common denominator is that the mixed number bolts usually have absolutly No simularity about them.  It is intruiging then, that both the action, barrel and bolt stub have this identical suffix, which it can not be disputed, not only is the font correct but it is even the same letter! I can’t think of why or how this could have happened but it is a fair bet, that this bolt and the rifle eminated from the same factory. The lowest number observed is “906” and the highest “9308r”.

The external surface of the action wall is marked “Mod.98”  The crest of the receiver is marked “duv / 41.” The right side of the receiver is marked with three 214 waffenampts, the LHS with the serial number and a clear eagle waffenampt clutching swastica.  The breech and of the barrel is marked externally with the same single waffenampt, the matching serial number and the barrel makers code, which once again is “duv.”  The barrel step carries the caliber designation of “7.90” and the rear sight base is also matched to the rifle.  The follower, the sight base and the magazine floor-plate and trigger guard also match.  The bands carry different numbers.  Hooded fore sight.  Graduated rear sight to 2000 meters.

The laminated stock is in fine condition with a good polished finish overall.  There is little sign of battle damage.  The butt-plate is the correct cupped type and the butt-stock also is fitted with the bolt strip-down disc.  A brown new leather sling is correctly attached and the rifle has a cleaning rod storred under the barrel; passing through below the bayonet fitting stud.  The blueing is original and shows similar wear all over with slight thining and high edge wear – but not the detriment of the rifle as a whole.  It would be peculiar if the thing was in a fresh, untouched black as it is currently 83 years old.  The bore is in fine bright condition with strong rifling and no pitting or misting.

As mentioned above the bolt carries a different serial number but the correct suffix ?  The mystery deepens.  All marked components are the same insluding the safety.  The action of the bolt is smooth but positive – this is going to be a pleasure to shoot.  Proofed upon import into the UK by Sword & Musket ten years ago from the USA.  Who will pick up the banner and be the next keeper………..
