U.S.  G.I.  Mauser “dot/1944” K98k bring-back

DSC_0002

This rifle really is a sleeper in that, it appears to have remained exactly the same as it was on the day the G.I who claimed, picked it up.  It even seems to have barely shot any rounds since.  The bore is in fantastic condition and is certainly original to the rifle.  Once again we have a rifle with matching numbers and a bolt with matching numbers, but, crucially the two don’t match.  Normal explanation being, standard surrender procedure in western theatres’ of war.  Troops were instructed to separate the bolt from the weapon to render it safe. Bolts went in one pile, rifles in another.  Nobody at that time was going to spend time sitting around trying to reunite serial numbers!  Winning the war was far more important.

Correct manufacturing specifications for date and location of manufactory.  The details on the rifle bear out the facts.  Standard K98k in 7.92 x 57mm  (8mm Mauser) Mauser turn-bolt action with Mauser flag safety system to rear. Internal staggered five-shot magazine.  Guide for stripper clip loading on front of rear action bridge.  Bolt release on rear LHS of action.  Action sidewall cut for thumb depression to aid clip loading. LHS outer action wall marked with model designation “Mod. 98”.

The crest of the receiver is marked with the manufacturers code and the date.  Reading from top down “dot / waffenamt over 63 / 1944”  The marking in the middle is absolutely right for the model.  The “dot” indicates the rifle was built at Waffen Werke Brunn AG.  On the RHS of the receiver ring are two clear 63 waffenamts.  To the LHS of the same is a clear Nazi Eagle over Swastika acceptance stamp.  The barrel is marked with the unique double letter suffix which Brunn used and serial number, reading; “7023/a s”  Right beside the serial number is a clear Eagle over Swastika marking acceptance stamp.   The bolt bears the serial number; ” 3642 k” on its components. Finish over the action, barrel and bolt are all extremely strong and highly original.  The coding on the top of the receiver has been highlighted in white.

Standard rear sights graduated from 100 to 2000 meters with no windage.  Hooded, inverted “V” front sight on a ramp.  The mid-band and the nose band are the correct steel pressed and welded type.  Both match the rifle number.  The trigger guard assembly and magazine floor plate are the correct type and the floor plate is also numbered to the rifle. The butt-plate is the right cupped steel type, devoid of its finish.  The stock is fitted with the bolt strip-down disc and cut for the side mounted leather sling. Between the strip-down disc and the butt plate on the RHS of the butt are the full set of Army acceptance cartouches most noticeable is the “H” for Army.

The laminated stock is in top condition and lookes to be original to the rifle in that it bears all the stock makers marks and the cartouches mentioned above.  Freshly oiled for future use.  The rifle has its cleaning rod mounted in the bayonet catch.  Also present is the rubber muzzle protector.

This really is going to be a pleasure to own and shoot – results are expected to be good.
