A good example of a rare British Sword Bayonet
The seldom encountered 1887 MkIII Sword Bayonet ith brass mounted scabbard.
Stamped on the ricaso with “Crown over V.R. / 88 over WILKINSON/SWORDCOMPANY/LONDON”
On the obverse “Broard arrow / WD / Crown over 49 over W”
The back of the blade with more inspection marks ” Crown over 35 over W” and “Crown over 49 over W”
18.1/4″ long blade in good condition with little or no pitting, sharpened along long edge.
Black chequered leather grips secured by two rivets – about 70% worn chequering. Stepped cross guard with muzzle ring and quillion – plain. Birds head pommel with sprung loaded catch and serial number of rifle to which it was issued 7826.
The scabbard is in equally good condition stitching is complete. Leather is supple and surface crazed but not cracked. Brass chape and locket with original wire laces. Frog stud and signs of conversion from earlier fixing where 3 round blanks are fitted into both sides of the locket just below the mouthpiece. Both chape and mouthpiece are stamped with “C.I.F. – broard arrow over I – 99 ” the mouthpiece also marked with “30” Internal mouth springs are intact. Fixes to right hand side of MkIV Long lever Martini-Henry 1886 .577/450 service rifle.
An interesting addition to any bayonet collection.
