A Good Wartime No 5 Mk I Jungle Carbine
The iconic No 5 Jungle Carbine built for action in World War Two. Chambered in the classic .303 British military calibre with a ten-shot removable box magazine. Classic Enfield action with lightened bolt head and cuts to action. These highly effective lightweight carbines were developed specifically for the confines of war in the jungle. This carbine measures 39.1/2″ in overall length. The shortened barrel is 20.1/2″ long including the flash hider. The trigger pull is 13.1/4″ The LHS of the action wall is marked as follows; “No 5 Mk I (F) / 9/45 R 1578” The “F” denotes Fazakerley where it was produced.
The problem of increased felt recoil was handled by the development and fitting of a rubber kick-pad. The barrel having been shortened, now produced a considerable muzzle flash which gave a potential enemy an easy was of pinpointing the soldier using the arm. This was dealt with by the fitting of the flash hider to the muzzle. The action is smooth and the bolt head fitted in a “0” fitting which indicates a lack of use. The rear of the bolt arm is also marked with a matching serial number. The weapon can be stripper-clip fed from above via the loading bridge straight into the magazine below.
The rear of the action is fitted with the correct folding carbine aperture sight which is graduated from 200 yards to 800. There is also a larger aperture battle sight for close combat situations. The safety catch is fitted to the rear LHS of the action and bolt release is via a catch on the RHS of the same. The steel but-socket is marked “ENGLAND” on both sides in differing sized text. The three-quarter length walnut stock shows signs of some military use but is not battered and has the plain sealed grain end. Minimal high edge wear indicating some service life but no major losses. Side mount for rear sling on but-plate, with front sling swivel mounted on barrel band. The front sight blade is protected by twin ear protectors and the extended bayonet mount is on the underside of the flash hider.
Excellent five-groove bore in fine condition. Bright with strong edged lands free from any corrosion.
A fine example of the No 5 Jungle Carbine ready for any collection and also any range.
