A Good example of the British No 5 Jungle Carbine

This is a very honest standard Enfield No 5  Jungle Carbine, chambered as it should be in the .303 British caliber.  Overall the rifle is 39″ in length.  The barrel is 20.1/2″ to the end of the flash hider.  The stock is one of the short fitment stocks with an “S” stamped on the top.  Serial number Z8601.

The action shows all the signs of a genuine carbine in that it has the typical lightening cuts for weight reduction.  The matching bolt has the hollow head and square lug type serrated cocking piece..  On inspection it was noted that the breech end of the barrel shows the correct knox form for a carbine with the serial number engraved as in the other places, which matches.  The LHS action wall is engraved as follows “No5 MK1 (F)  /  3/47  Z8601”

The rifle has the correct carbine sights which are graduated up to 800 yards, and are well hatched to reduce glare and stamped with the war department broad arrow and an “F” for Fazakerley, where the rifle was manufactured.  Safety catch on LHS of action at rear.

The LHS wrist is marked with a broad arrow over “ENGLAND”.   The blued bolt head is marked as an “O” fitting.  The detachable 10 shot box magazine under is marked with another “Z” prefix number but is not matching.  There are numerous factory inspection codes on many components of the rifle.  The rifles serial number is stamped into the for-end just behind the metal nose-cap, which itself is marked with an “F”.  The butt-plate is the pressed steel type with captive rubber pad and side mounting for sling.

There is a forward mount for the sling under the single barrel band.  The flash hider incorporates a bayonet lug, foresight and foresight protector ears.

The action is excellent and cycles well.  The bore is dirty but the rifling sharp and deep – it does not seem to show much usage.  The wood work is all good with no splits or cracks and is known as the the lighter wood type.  A very genuine Carbine that has returned to its country of origin for the next phase of its long life.
