No4 Enfield by Longbranch of Canada (f479)…………..SOLD
Created on July 24th 2015
A very good example of the famous No4 by Canadian maker Longbranch
This rifle is the famous No4 MkI used by British and Commonwealth Forces from the Second World War on-wards. Chambered in British .303 with a ten round detachable box magazine ( numbered to rifle). The rifle was originally built in 1943 by the Long Branch plant in Canada, the serial number is 41L0869. ( There is always a capital L in Long Branch numbers) 44.1/4″ (120.5cm) in length. 25.1/4″ (64 cm) long round blacked barrel, with protected front sight.
Fully stocked with semi-pistol grip stock in European hardwood. The butt-stock has the traditional brass butt-plate with trap for oil bottle and pull-through. The rifle has two sling swivels. The woodwork is in very good condition and has numerous markings and inspectors stamps on it. Most noticeably the serial number of the rifle is impressed into the underside of the fore-end. There is an “S” inside the pistol grip which denotes “short” stock ;- the pull is 13.3/8″ to center.
The wrist is stamped with the serial number on the LHS. The LHS of the action wall is marked with the original build details as follows: “No 4 MKI * / LONG BRANCH / 1943” Then later on in the rifle’s life it has been back into armory for a refit and more markings with an electro’-pencil have been applied: The “LONG BRANCH” has been struck through with a horizontal line and the following applied: ” /3 (F) FTR” to the RHS of the original, and “/51. 41L0869.” The “(F)” is for the Fazakerley plant and “FTR” means Factory Thorough Refit.
The serial number is also applied in the same manner the the bolt arm. The FTR has had one very positive effect, it appears the rifle has benefited from a new barrel. The bore is in such excellent condition. It has sharp, clean 5-grove rifling with no pitting or frosting. This rifle is going to shoot well with a bore like this. The rear sight has an open aperture battle sight when in the laid-d0wn position and a smaller aperture sight when used with the upright ladder setting. The sight is graduated from 2 to 1300 yards. Normal Enfield type safety mounted on the rear RHS of the action.
Altogether a neat and tidy re-furbished No 4 ready for use for some years to come. Rifle comes with No 4 Mk II Spike bayonet by Savage. Lets face it, its going to out last us !
