A good No 5 Enfield Jungle carbine
A fine example of an Enfield No 5 Jungle Carbine produced at Royal Ordinance Fazakerley at the end of the second world war. The No 5 carbine was the answer to jungle warfare, developed to be lighter and less cumbersome than its big brother the No4. Shorter in length, the idea was a weapon that was quicker to use within the confines of dense jungle. The weapon still packs the punch of the .303 cartridge and maintains the capacity of the detachable ten round magazine.
Overall the weapon is 39.3/4″ in length. The barrel is 20.1/2″ long including the flash hider. The pull length is 13.1/2″. This carbine is stocked in the Australian Coachwood which is lighter and less dense than walnut with a light coloured Beech hand-guard. The butt-stock is fitted with the rubber butt-pad peculiar to the No 5 which was designed to soak-up recoil – the results were debatable! The pressed steel surround which contains the rubber pad incorporates the rear sling mounting point on the RHS. the front sling swivel is secured to the barrel band.
The bolt head has been drilled to reduce weight and the action shows the two lightening cuts designed to accomplish the same. Rectangular cocking piece and No 1 bolt head fitted. The steel butt socket is marked with the WD arrow on the LHS. The LHS action outer wall is marked as follows: “No 5 MK I (ROF) F / 5/46 V8573”. Safety catch mounted on LHS to rear of action. The flash hider incorporates the bayonet lug (under) and ears which protect the foresight.
The stock is all in good condition with factory inspectors marks under the wrist just behind the trigger guard. Minimal signs of usage to stock and some flaking to painted black finish all over. The magazine shows more wear than the balance of the rifle and also bears a “V” suffix serial number but does not match. The rear adjustable aperture sight is the correct carbine fitment graduated up to 800 yards also produced at Fazakerley. The rifle is also carries the correct period canvass sling. The bore is in good condition with no pitting and strong rifling. The weapon carries British proofs.
