A Lee-Enfield Mk I* Magazine Loading Rifle
Serial number 9767H stamped into side of receiver. Overall length of the rifle is 49.1/4.” Trigger pull 13.1/4.” Bolt non-matching with a sheet steel dust cover. Full length woodwork with short top hand guard – ill-fitting, split & repaired.
Butt socket marked on RHS, just under bolt head when the rifle is closed down; “Crown / E.R. /L.S.A Co Ltd / 1901 /LE / I*” All very clear – no rubbing or scrubbing. The bolt has the D-shaped cocking piece, the bar underneath is nicely marked with a clear “WD” mark on the LHS and a clear Enfield inspectors mark on the other. The action is fitted with a magazine cut-off device.
The barrel is round and blued at 30″ in length. Mounted on top of the barrel towards the breech are the rear sights. They consist of a ramp originally graduated from 200 to 500 yards, but in a later modification a further point of 600 was added. This probably happened when the rifle had an Enfield rifled barrel fitted and it picked up its star (*) within the model designation. The leaf is then graduated from 600 to 1900 yards. It also has a very useful windage ability with good markings and easy to use adjustment and locking wheels. The aiming point is a “U” shaped opening which neatly frames the blade front sight. The front sight is on a “ramped” block which has had an ear protector band added and fixed through the block.
The fore-end cap and bayonet fitting also carries the stacking swivel and on this model the hole for the cleaning rod has been dispensed with. Simple mid band that carries the forward sling swivel. Immediately behind that mounted on the LHS fore-end is the forward component of the volley sight, the dial – this is complete with button. The arm is clearly marked with the broad arrow over EFD. The rear of the volley sight is the aperture on a short arm which is in position at the rear of the action. There is no safety on this rifle.
Detachable 10 shot magazine on underside of rifle. The chain link is missing, but the anchor points on the magazine body and the trigger guard are still in place. Serrated trigger within trigger guard with a clear broad arrow on the rear. The butt-stock is a semi pistol grip type with a brass butt-plate and tang. The tang is clearly marked with the following; ” S.W.A.P. / 151″ The butt is drilled for cleaning rod and bottle beneath brass butt-plate trap.
The rifle has been sympathetically fitted with a new .303 barrel in the original form- new owner will have to shoot-in this virgin barrel.!! Adjacent to the breech, on the top of the receiver ring, clearly stamped, are the letters “T.V.” – one suggestion has been “Tasmanian Volunteers” ?
The action is smooth and functions correctly. This Lee-Enfield has recently passed proof and is ready to hit the ranges again.
