High Grade Mk I Lee-Enfield with Lee Speed Patents
Of standard military specification, with some extras, in fine condition chambered in .303 The full length Mk I Lee-Enfield Infantry Rifle with detachable ten-shot steel box magazine. This rifle has all the extras still intact including the rarely found fluted cleaning rod. This is not full length but can be screwed into an other, to service the full length of the barrel. This is a genuine rod as inspector marked near the fluted end. Also, still with the rifle is the detachable dust cover which attaches to the bolt. The magazine cut-off and the forward long range dial sights. However the instantly recognisable main addition to this fine rifle is the rear aperture competition sights made by BSA. Highly adjustable and fully functioning, providing a far more accurate aiming facility and a valuable addition to the rifle as a whole.
Full length woodwork of high quality and finish with a genuine patina built up over the surface and natural colour to all parts of the stock. Overall the rifle measures 49.3/8″ in length. The round finely blued barrel is 30″ long and the Pull is 13.1/4″ to centre. The half length cleaning rod is 17.1/4″ long and stores under the barrel, through the forend cap and bayonet fitting. Enfield bolt system with detachable bolt head. The safety is mounted to the rear RHS of the bolt. When the switch is down the rifle will function fully, once pulled upward it applies the safety and locks the bolt in position. Magazine cut-off is mounted between the bolt and the magazine, consisting of a sprung cover which interrupts feed from the magazine. This all goes back to the high ups not trusting the average soldier to conserve ammunition.
The rear sights on this fine Mk I Enfield are of ramp and ladder type. The side of the ramp is graduated from 200 to 500 yards. When the ladder is up that section is graduated from 600 to 1800 yards. Open “V” aiming picture with silver lines for estimated windage on the flat face of the slide. Simple inverted “V” front sight on a ramp. The dial and pointer for the long range volley sight are still intact, the dial being marked from 1600 to 2800 yards. A most excellent close grained walnut stock with a hint of tiger stripe on the underside of the butt-stock. Brass butt-plate with trap for cleaning equipment, pull-through in position. The detachable magazine still has its chain link to stop loss of the magazine.
The RHS of the wrist is marked as follows; “L.S.A. Co LD / L. E. / I.” The RHS of the receiver is marked in small text; “LEE-SPEED / PATENTS.” The upper rear of the action has the serial number “2544/C” clearly marked and the bolt is matching. No loading or rear action bridge, and bolt release at the rear of the bolt travel. The rifle is Nitro Proved and marked so on the barrel knox form. The condition of the blueing is excellent, showing much original blue with the extra quality bluing evident upon the barrel bands in particular. Cosmetic wear is of a minimum. Serrated trigger. Rear sling is a/f but two remain; the front and one situated just in front of the magazine well. Condition of rifling is very good with no interruptions or pitting and still bright with no misting.
An opportunity to acquire a very fine rifle in excellent and collectible condition with many extras remaining. It would be very hard to improve upon this example.
