A very good, highly correct example of the No 4 made by the Canadian plant Long Branch in 1942.  Canada was relatively unmolested by Axis forces and became one of the major arms producers for the Allies during World War Two.  This excellent example is absolutely correct for this mark.  It bears the serial number “15L9413” on the LHS of the butt socket.   The LHS action wall is marked with the designation and date, reading; “No4 MkI* / Long Branch /1942.”   The bridge of the receiver is marked with the mark for South Africa; “broad arrow within a capital U.”  The rear of the bolt arm is also marked with a matching serial number.  Solid bolt head with outer flat and rectangular cocking piece.  Gas escape hole on LHS of receiver.  The rifle cocks on closing.

Full length dark walnut butt-stock, fore-end and hand-guard.  The rear section of the latter being fluted.  Colour match is good over the whole of the rifle.  The butt-stock has some clear marks impressed behind the trigger guard. “Long Branch (LB) logo / 66.  C with broad arrow within.   C within an oblong circle and the figure 9″.   Fitted with the correct alloy type grey butt-plate with trap for cleaning gear.  Correct brown Bakelite oiler within.  Unmarked ten-shot detachable box magazine, follower LB stamped.  The underside, towards the end-cap of the fore-end is marked as follows;  “LB / 66,  C with broad arrow within, serial number  “15L9413″  M and 7”  LB marked trigger plate surrounding magazine.  Correct LB marked safety catch.

Large aperture battle sight mounted on rear of action for close-quarter fighting.  The flip up ladder sight is graduated from 200 to 1300 yards – fully functioning and has a finer aperture to view the target.  The rear face of the aperture plate is cross-hatched to reduce glare.  Fine clicker adjustment wheel mounted at the top of the ladder.   The side of the sight is LB marked.   The front band is marked on the LHS with LB stamp, as is the front sight guard which also carries the Canadian acceptance C/arrow marking.

The rifle is fitted with the correct Canadian marked light-khaki coloured canvas sling.  The sling carries the date for 194 _ (illegible) and is correctly fitted through the sling swivels.  All the bolt components carry the correct LB stamps.  The bolt head is a “0” graded item.  The zero indicates the head-space on this rifle has not had to be altered by the armorer, meaning minimal use.  The rifle is 44.1/4″ long.  The round barrel is 25.1/8″ long and the trigger pull is 13.1/4″ to centre.  Excellent matt-blued military finish to all components with minimal signs of wear.  Two grove RH twist bore with much more use left in it.
