Enfield No 4 MK I (R.F.I.)…………….SOLD
Created on June 17th 2014
A Good Fun Gun in the form of a No 4 Mk I with RFI markings
Of standard production, chambered in .303 British. Detachable 10-shot magazine. 44″ long. Barrel 25″. Trigger pull length 13.1/4″. Fully stocked in Walnut with full length handguard. Aluminium butt-plate with trap for cleaning equipment. Two sling swivels and front sight guard. The actual sight block is marked RFI. Muzzle is equipped with lugs for No 4 spike bayonet.
This No 4 is marked about the wrist as follows, “F.R. / 1963 / R.F.I.” This stands for Factory Repair, date of repair, Rifle Factory Ishapore. It is important to note that No No 4 rifles were ever MADE at Ishapore. They were repaired and then marked accordingly, after removing the original wrist markings. This rifle has been fitted with a two groove replacement barrel, which is spotless. this is probably the repair which the markings are referring to.
The side of the action is marked simply “No4 MK1” At the rear of the action on the LHS is a large “4” one would imagine, for obvious reasons. The RHS of the receiver is marked with the serial number “07371” There are no other markings on the action.
The bolt arm is marked with the matching number. It is fitted with a Savage number 2 bolt head. It uses the push forward bolt removal slot in the guide to effect removal of the item. To the rear of the action are the sights. In the laying down or stored position there is a large aperture or battle sight, up right and there is an adjustable aperture sight for longer distances which is graduated from 2 to 1300 yards. The bolt has the rectangular number 4 cocking piece. The rifles’ safety works on the bolt from the rear LHS of the action; in the upright or forward position the rifle will fire, pulled to the rear the rifle is safe.
The Number Four can be loaded singly or by two stripper clips through the top of the action. There is guide or loading bridge which places the sprung clip in the correct position to easily load the magazine. If necessary the magazine can be removed by pressing the magazine release clip which is situated within the trigger guard. Magazine numbered to another rifle and now with chipped black paint.
The stock is in fairly good condition with no splits or cracks. There is some little damage underneath the butt but nothing serious. The RHS flat face of the butt is marked with a stamping “S broad arrow A / I” this is the Indian post Independence mark. There are a number of inspectors marks and a large “S” on the butt, just behind the trigger guard.
All the wear on the rifle looks right for a well used rifle, but the bore looks like it has come straight out of stores on its first day of use! Lull you friends into a false sense of security on the firing point, then knock their socks of, with what looks like, a tired old war horse ! London proofed 2014.
