Enfield No 5 Mk I Jungle Carbine by Fazakerley
A fine surviving example of the famous No 5 Enfield. One of the last produced so maybe, never had to experience the rigours of jungle combat. The sidewall is engraved as follows, to bear this point out; “No5 Mk I (F) / 8/47 AB 8356” The serial number tallies with the date of August 1947. The LHS but-socket also bears the the word “ENGLAND” and an inverted Broad Arrow mark. The rear face of the bolt arm is marked with the matching serial number. Standard issue Jungle carbine with detachable ten-shot box magazine, also clearly marked with the serial number. Enfield bolt action turn-bolt system with interchangeable bolt head marked “1” which cocks on closing. The “1” indicates the first stage of bolt head usage, which would infer very little use. Square head cocking piece and correct hollow bolt handle. The underneath of the bolt at the cocking piece is marked with the Fazakerley marking “F/47.” The action has the correct lightening cuts purely to reduce weight. The barrel knox form will also have the weight reduction cut-outs if the hand guard were removed. Excellent left-hand twist five-groove Enfield rifling within a spotless bore. No rusting or misting and certainly no pitting.
Overall this carbine is 39.1/2 ” long. The barrel is 20.1/2 including the flash hider and the trigger pull length is a nominal 13.1/2″. The flash hider was fitted to reduce muzzle flash within the close confines of the jungle. As no change was made to the ammunition, the cordite would still be burning beyond the length of such a short barrel. The flash hider includes twin ear protection for the foresight block and a bayonet stud for the specially developed carbine bayonet. The lightening of the weapon and shortening did however have an unpleasant secondary effect, of increasing felt recoil on the user. Consequently a rubber kick pad was developed which is contained in a pressed steel but-plate, however, it is questionable if this actually served the purpose it was designed for! As the surface area of contact was reduced it concentrated the impact onto a smaller zone, thus once again, increasing the felt recoil! the steel surround to the rubber butt-pad incorporates the side sling mounting bar.
Chambered in the standard .303 British and fitted with a specifically designed carbine flip-up rear sight graduated from 200 to 800 yards. Marked on both face and side with a “F.” In the folded down position, there is an aperture battle sight for distances up to 200 yards which enables rapid target acquisition. The rifle itself shows very little sign of use, in that there is very little high edge wear to the black finish on the action or any other components. The hardwood beech stock is in good condition with virtually no perceptible damage. There is a sling mounting point timber patch repair which has been very effectively carried out on the underside of the stock. I can not think of why you would want a number four-type sling mount on a number five butt? The fore end is not fitted with the steel end cap of the later type which ties in with the production date.
A good usable example of the type, ready to fill that hard to find gap in your rifle collection. British proofs applied.
