1939 S.M.L.E. Bolt Action Rifle………SOLD

Created on December 15th 2011

British Short Magazine Lee Enfield Rifle No 1 MkIII

Of standard Service specification in .303 British.  S/n L49092.

Bolt action rifle with a detachable ten shot magazine.  Full length stock and hanguard ending at the classic snub-nose muzzle.  Semi pistol grip butt stock with brass butt plate, incorporating trap for cleaning gear.  There is a blank ID disk in the butt with a very small marking.  Standard rear sights with later non-dished rear sight protectors and no windage adjustment.

The bolt has the later square cocking piece.  Unusually, the action retains the early magazine cut-off device to limit the user to single shot fire.  Another early feature retained by the rifle is the forend woodwork where the shaping for the long range volley sight is still visible.

The butt socket is marked  with the “Crown/G.R. / B.S.A.Co /1939 /SHT. LE / III”

The whole rifle has a good used patina about it, both on the woodwork and the metal parts.  There are no major blemishes on the stock or hand guards.  The action mechanically fine the bore fair.

An Enfield rifle that was in service at the time of the escape from Dunkirk by the B.E.F. and still good enough to use today.
