EVANS “NEW MODEL” REPEATING CARBINE. (Gun in center -above)

No visible Serial number – which is correct for this model.  39.1/4″ overall length.  Barrel length 20.1/2″     American Black Walnut stocks.  Single forward barrel band which is central to the barrels length.  Sling swivel A/F.  The butt stock is a thing of beauty made of two distinct parts, sculpted around the large tubular central structure.  This central structure is the magazine, capable of holding an incredible 28 rounds.  Where stock meets the magazine the timber is cleverly fashioned down to about an 1/8″ thick lip.  Produced from approximately 1877 to 1879 when they managed to make 4000 plus weapons.

Caliber .44 Center fire with 1.1/2″ shell.  The weapon’s magazine was loaded from a opening in the steel butt-plate.  It is protected by a sliding cover, where one would expect the cleaning gear to be kept.  This large revolving magazine had the distinction of being the highest capacity repeating weapon ever produced in its time.

The cocking lever underneath the action performs a multitude of functions which are all concealed within its sturdy frame work.  As the lever is pulled down the opening on the side is revealed and the used shell ejected.  At the same time the revolving magazine presents the next round.  The lever is then closed and that round pushed into the chamber as the lever closes the hammer is cocked.  The complete firing pin assembly is mounted within the mechanism contained in the block that comes down with the lever.  When the trigger is pulled the hammer “falls” but is actually pushing up from underneath.  The complete action and magazine assembly is contained within a two piece cover which is split down the center.  This cover or what constitutes “the action” was blued but now is flaking away and turning to a good brown patina.  The barrel is plum/brown all over.

The sights mounted on the top of the barrel are of a simple ramp type.  The top of the barrel is marked in a single line as follows; ” EVANS REPEATING RIFLE  MECHANIC FALLS ME/PAT  DEC 8 1868 7 SEPT 16, 1871.”   The bore is in good condition showing strong rifling with some relatively minor pitting considering, the use of black powder as the propellant of the time.  None of the screw heads are damaged, the mechanics are fine and the action is smooth yet positive.  Any other letters or numbers spotted on the carbine will be inspectors marks.  This is a rare and very interesting carbine in very good condition for its age.  A real chance for any U.S.  military or carbine collector to pick up a distinct specialty piece.
