Snider-Enfield Cavalry Carbine MK III……SOLD
Created on June 5th 2015
Snider Cavalry Carbine with the best bore I have ever seen !
Of standard British Army Cavalry specifications as produced by Enfield in 1870. Serial number 5668. .577 cal. 37.1/8″ long. It weighs 7 lb The round barrel is 19.1/4″ long with a superb 5-groove rifling in excellent condition. These carbines in particular were purpose built as can be seen by the “III” on the breech and the fact that the stock has been made from scratch as there is no sign off an infilled cleaning rod channel at the tip of the fore-end.
The flat plain lock is marked with a crown and “V.R.” behind the lock and a “crown over the crows foot /1870 /ENFIELD” There is also a “2” on the forward top edge of the lock. The hammer securing screw is marked with the crows foot. The steel barrel is secured by a single barrel band, also marked with “broad arrow /WD/ crown/E /6” an Enfield inspectors mark. There are in fact multiple Enfield and War Department marks all over this weapon – too many to describe but all correct to the model and mark of the carbine. The lock is a two position mechanism.
The barrel is marked with multiple stampings starting with the word “STEEL”. The breech also carries clear crossed scepters WD and Enfield marks. The swiveling breeh block is stamped with the serial number on the inside beside inspectors stamp. It is also clearly marked on the external surface between the firing pin channel and the release catch. The actual cross-hatched release catch is crows-foot marked on the underside. As with the lock securing screw heads which sit in brass cups. The rear sight is number stamped to the rifle. On the other side of the barrel to the rear sight is yet another Enfield inspectors stamp but over it has been stamped a much larger number “A 934” meaning unknown.
The stock fittings are all brass, the trigger guard being fitted with a ring for a protector chain (A/F) At the rear of the brass trigger guard tang is an additional fitment of a steel swiveling ring. On the RHS of the butt-stock it has been marked with the opposing arrow, sold out of service mark. Beneath that is R.S.A.F. roundel with WD and crows foot in the center, below that is a plain clear 1. In the center of the thick brass butt-plate is a trap for the two piece WD marked cleaning rod – which is present. There are two screws affixed into the side of the fore-end which are thereto fit the leather sight protector to also absent. The stock is in excellent shape with three minor armory type repairs which are still flush with the surface.
Altogether the is the best carbine I have ever had the privilege to offer. All components are clean and fully functioning, the ejector mechanism works well. The breech is clear and clean as as stated earlier, the barrel is just excellent.
