Percussion Native Issue Enfield Carbine SOLD

Enfield built Percussion Sepoy Carbine
An interesting Enfield percussion Carbine with signs of alteration for use by the Sepoy regiments. The main indicator to the Indian connection is the smooth-bored barrel and thin wall thickness. This was done after the Sepoy revolt to deny the remaining loyal or defeated Sepoys, that continued fighting alongside the British, the opportunity to revolt again. The idea was to place the natives at a disadvantage as the Army no longer trusted them after the debacle of the mutiny. The lack of rifling was meant to sustain an advantage for the British over their Indian allies should they chose the revolt again. A pretty cynical measure as it also placed the natives at a disadvantage in their efforts when supporting the British, but the powers that be were not interested in a minor irritation like that!
The carbine has been smooth-bored to a .61 calibre as opposed to the original .577 rifled Minie that it had been before. It is still percussion with a fixed open “V” rear sight. Overall the carbine measures 36.1/2″. The round barrel is approximately 21″ long. The trigger Pull to centre is 13.1/2″. Twin barrel bands with captive ram-rod in stirrups. brass fittings including two part butt protection – the upper section clearly “WD” marked. The RHS of the butt-stock is marked with the “R.M ENFIELD” roundel under which is a clear “1” as part of the cartouche.
Plain unmarked lock-plate and hammer with checked thumb-piece. Two position lock fully functional, holds on both positions. Steel saddle ring bar with lanyard ring in position. The main tang screw is clearly marked with the broad arrow. Finish has turned to plumb brown all over. Stock is in fine to good condition with signs of a military life but nothing unpleasant and smooth all over. Bore pitted – as expected !
Pictured below at rear (with Snider Carbine – see other post)
An honest collectible carbine in condition expected for its age.
