5th Model Burnside Carbine……SOLD
Created on March 18th 2014
Burnside Percussion Civil War Carbine.
A good example of the popular Burnside Carbine.
Chambered in .52 caliber and originally for use with a copper or tapered foil case. Ignition was by percussion cap. Serial number, on top of the breech block “9549” this is repeated on the fixed section of the breech. The serial number appears on the top frame, underneath the following ” BURNSIDE’S PATENT / MODEL 1864″ These carbines were produced from approximately 1863-65.
The weapon measures 39.1/2″ from muzzle to toe of crescent moon butt plate, The round blued barrel is 21″ long with simple sights. The rifle is stocked in American walnut with a small fore-end. The barrel is secured with a single barrel band held in place by a spring located near the fore-end nose. The fore-end has suffered a small loss on the LHS running up to the frame – about an 1/8″ deep by 1 ” long. In general the fore-end is worn to a smooth pleasing patina, no doubt by a leather gloved cavalry hand.
The butt-stock has a crescent moon shaped steel butt-plate, a lower sling swivel and houses the “tail” type lock. The stock is marked crudely on each side; “W.P” on the Right hand side and on the left; “J.L”. Both these inscriptions look deep enough and old enough, in that they are dark and also have patina over them, to surmise that they have been there a long time. This carbine has been sympathetically restored in its original form. The action frame is deeply case colour hardened and the barrel is blackened. The breech block has remained a dark golden metallic hue which suggests some colour from heat. This is the 5th model carbine with a guide screw in the RHS of the frame which enables smooth and easy operation of the mechanism. The LHS of the frame has the saddle ring bar and forged lanyard ring still in place.
The under lever’s which open the breech have remained a grey gun-metal colour with strongest wear on the high points and surfaces. There are strong case colours in both the action tang straps; top and bottom. The face of the lock has been heavily cleaned and the “BURNSIDE” text is almost completely gone. The hammer is a strong blue.
The bore has strong rifling with minimal pitting and the action feels good. Altogether this attractive little carbine would make a handsome addition to any U.S. Civil War collection.
