Cased police

Inscribed Police Colt, 1862 model, cased with accessories.

serial numbered 22090 for 1863 (civil war era) .36cal’ 5.1/2″ round barrel, blue/cashardened finish with walnut grips. When manufactured the barrel and half fluted cylinder were blue, the loading lever, frame and hammer casehardened and the grip silverplated brass – honest use has removed all the silver plating. The barrel shows the one line New York address and “COLTS / PATENT” on the left side of the frame with “PAT SEPT 10, 1850” in one of the cylinder flutes.

The backstrap is inscribed “Dept. U.L. Provost Marshal Geo, V. Leicester. – Boston M” This is a piece wanting to be researched. As of this date a George, V, Leicester appears in the 1880 cencus residing in Boston Mass, so we presume he survived the war and was re-presented his revolver possibly on retirement, as the case is not a colt case, but contempoary to the piece.

All matching numbers including the wedge. Smooth varnished walnut grips. Complete in wooden lined case with accessories including “Pluribus Unum” flask, correctly marked two cavity bullet mold, cap tin and approx 6 bullets.

Condition: Fair – correct to its age, action tight and correctly timed, cylinder stops intact. The whole gun shows a mottled grey/brown patina with light scratches and small dings. There is no evidence of any tampering at any time. The loading lever still shows traces of its original blue finish. Some varnish loss to the grips. The case is fair showing light to moderate wear. The assessories are showing wear but are good.

A fine piece of history waiting to be unravelled.
