Created on October 1st 2008
5 Shot Double Action Revolver by Robert Adams. 120 bore .
Serial number 24314R on frame and cylinder. Circa 1858-65.
This revolver retains 75% of its original superb finish, with 4.3/8″ engraved octagonal sighted barrel with a small band of foilage about the muzzle. The top strap is engraved “ROBERT ADAMS, LONDON” with excellent finish around it. The frame is scroll engraved, the safety stop blued. The trigger guard and pommel show a small amount of loss to their blueing. Fine London proof marks are visible on the barrel and the cylinder.
The revolver is presented in its original oak baize lined box. Accessories include Dixon powder-flask and oil bottle, plus, more importantly, its 120 bore brass double-cavity bullet mould, marked “R.Adams Patent” & “120”. There is also an empty Eley cap bag, a turnscrew, nipple key and cleaning rod. The lid of the oak case has a vacant brass escutcheon.
The revolver is mechanically fine and in good working order and condition. The bore has the lightest pitting with good strong rifling. Timing and lock-up are correct. This fine little set has weathered the passing of time remarkably well and is a splendid testament to the design and good build quality of the ingenious Victorians.
