Created on November 25th 2011
A Good Winchester P14 Service Rifle in .303
Of standard specification in .303 for the British services. Serial numbered on the breech W57487. War department broard arrows and “crowned G.R. over crossed flags” on action wall. This is the George V cypher for between 1910 and 1936. The bolt handle appears to be re-numbered to match the rifle, also marked with “N.S.” for nickle steel.
Overall length 46.1/2″ Barrel length 25.3/4″. Full length Semi-pistol grip Walnut Stock with finger grooves and two piece hand guard. Mauser action with 5-shot internal magazine, Enfield type rear safety. Appature battle sight on flip-up ladder sight graduated to 1600 yards. Blade front sight protected by ears. Two sling swivels and steel fore-end cap with bayonet fitting. Flat steel butt-plate with trap for cleaning equipment.
The fore end still retains the flat steel dial for the long range volley sights, but the pointer has been removed. There are some interesting markings on the RHS of the butt stock along with a blank brass identity disc. Underneath the disc is what appears to be a Maltese Cross. Adjacent to the disc is a broard arrow over “I.W” in a circle IW being the Winchester Butt marking, over what looks like “PATT’ 14” a later mark.
The action, barrel magazine floor plate and trigger guard retain about 80% of the original blued finish. The bore is excellent with no pitting or frosting and sharp deep rifling. Action fine. Altogether this is a very usable rifle.
