U.S. Springfield Armoury  Model 1898 Krag Rifle with Sling & Bayonet in .30-40 cal’

s/n 311583. 30″ round barrel – very good bore. Blued finish, walnut stock. The left side of the receiver retains most of its colour and is marked “US. MODEL 1898. SPRINGFIELD ARMOURY” followed by its serial number. The rifle is fitted with the Lyman bead blade front sight, with a superb tangent rear sight which is graduated to 2000 yards. The end cap incorporates the bayonet lug and the rifle has all three sling swivles and a leather sling.

The slender wrist is stamped underneath with the proof “P” mark and the side with a very clear inspectors cartouche which is dated 1901. The  rifel has a polished bolt with blued parts and case-hardened finished parts still exhibiting strong colours on the loading gate, cocking piece and safety.

The stock is full length with hand guard and grasping grooves, numbered with a large “1549” on the right side of the butt. The stock is almost without wear with the exception of a small 2″ long slither near the end cap, otherwise it appears almost undamaged .

The whole rifle is in very good condition with a smooth surface to all of the woodwork. Most of the surfaces have retained a depth of colour turning to brown mixed in with yellow accents on the barrel and barrel bands. There are strong areas of original blue in protected areas.

Purchase of the bayonet and scabbard are optional, although both are in fine condition. The bayonet being dated 1898 and marked “US”. A chance to purchase a 107 year old rifle with an excellent bore…..One of the best seen this side of the pond
