Excellent Springfield Model 1898 U.S.Krag Service Rifle
In Standard Service caliber of .30-40 (.30US)
Blued barrel of 30″ and blued receiver.
Receiver marked “US / Model 1898 Springfield Armoury 441469” Perfect case colour hardened receiver, showing mottled grey / blue colouring with no wear. There is still some hardened grease in sheltered spots. Action perfect. Clear mint inspectors cartouche “JSA/1903” for J. Sumner Adams, on left-hand side of stock. Stock is virtually undamaged and very good order with a pleasing patina. Firing proofs under the stock behind trigger guard. The bolt is bright as issued the rest of the weapon retains 98% of all colour and blueing – it would be extremely difficult to improve on this rifle with one of a similar age of 106 years!
Sights correct as with barrel band, steel but plate and end cap. Good bore. Fixed foresight. Fully adjustable tangent rear sight with “Sergeant Peep” sliding apature rear sight – 1902 configuration. Magazine cut-off, standard safety catch, all in perfect working order and with an action as smooth as it was on the day it was first issued. This is a real sleeper, Where has it been? How come it has survived so well? – Unknown. All that is known is that this item sits before us as if a week old and no one has attempted to refinish it at any time on any part. A mystery.
