Created on April 11th 2011
In .45/70 Govt’ caliber The Sharps-Borchardt Rifle
Internal hammer Breech-loading rifle manufactured from 1878 to approximately 1880.
Overall length 46″ with a 30″ octagonal hevey barrel with dove-tailed German Silver fore sight and plain long range buck-horn rear sights. The top flat marked “SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN.” Strong clean bore with minimal frosting.
On lowering the lever the breech drops to expose the chamber and extractor. Once closed the rifle is cocked but the trigger held with a manual external safety in the form of a rear “trigger”. This needs releasing to be able to pull the trigger once in the aim. The side of the action is marked “BROCHARDT PATENT / SHARPS RIFLE Co, BRIDGEPORT CONN. / U.S.A.” where it has received a few over enthusiastic thumps – it looks as if to release the central pin, at some time in its long life.” The action is fine and operates smoothly.
Plain American Black Walnut stocks. The forend held by two fixings, the shoulder stock with chequered steel shotgun style butt-plate. The stock has been professionaly repaired at sometime about the wrist and is firm and well finished with a medium polish and pleasing patina. The rifle exhibits a plum-brown patina from age with some blue remaining on the action. British proofs are under the forend
