Superb Quality Remington Rolling Block Military Rifle
Condition and Quality of this rifle can not be overstated. Its a definite “Sleeper” Where its been since 1897 and what’s its been doing are a mystery! Evidence suggests it has not had a hard life. The only marks on the stock are the accidental storage and handling dents that do creep in over 124 years. Chambered in 7mm Mauser. Single shot highly reliable Remington Rolling Block action in splendid condition with strong case-colour hardening evident all over. Built to military musket specification.
The rifle is 45.1/4″ long. The round blued barrel is 30.3/16″ long and the trigger pull is 13.1/8″ to centre. Serial number is “Y 127” marked on the over the chamber, under the half length hand-guard. This rolling block is stocked in the classic choice for the American military – American Black Walnut; with a butt-stock and fore-end and hand-guard. The fore-end cap includes a bayonet fitting through which passes a full length cleaning rod – in position. Twin sling swivels and plain steel butt-plate still showing 95% of its polished blue finish. All steel furniture showing a strong degree of original blueing.
The Rolling-block action of the rifle is really the piece-de-resistance. Strong yet not overstated case colour hardening is the chosen finish. Rust has not had a chance to get a footing anywhere. The blued hammer and block show fine original bluing in contrast to the greys and colouring around them. New firing pin fitted. The top surface of the action tang is roll stamped with the following: REMINGTON ARMS- UNION METALLIC CTG CO. / REM, WORKS, ILION. N.Y. PATD, OCT 22. 1901.” Other markings in the steelwork of the rifle include the calibre marking “CAL. 7. M.M.” on the top of the barrel approximately half way along and a circled “R.R” just adjacent to the nose-cap and bayonet fitting, near the muzzle end of the barrel. There are standard individual “U” markings on the side of the bands, as per Springfields normal practice.
The rear sight is a simple sliding ramp device graduated from 600 to 1900 yards with ranges on the side of the ramp from 100 to 500 yards. No windage with an inverted “V” front sight. Two individual stock makers marks appear on the underside of the butt-stock in the form of a single “W” and an “R” between the lower tang and the rear sling swivel. There is a clear “6” on the top surface at the rear of the hand-guard – meaning unknown. Stock colour is strong and finish is even all over. No splits or cracks noted – fine condition. The bore can only be described as excellent. Full length strong rifling, clean, no pitting frosting or misting 6-grove RH twist. UK CIP proofed for 7 x 57mm Mauser. 2021.
An unusual Remington in a modern Smokeless round. Its a “got to be” for a Military rifle collector.
