Model 1898 Krag Rifle……………..SOLD
Created on September 11th 2009
An Extremely Good Example of a U.S. Model 1898 Krag Service Rifle
Serial number 401875 marked on action, which from Springfield records means the weapon was built in 1902. The serial number falls within a block of rifles which travelled to Europe in WW1 with Railway Engineer troops. There were some 7597 rifles of this type in France which were replaced by M1903s in November 1917. Infact by studying the serial number records it would be hard to find a reason why this rifle was NOT there. The strongest possibility would be the 18th Railway Engineer Regiment of the American Expiditionary Force. In standard Army caliber of .30-40 otherwise known as “30 US” with an excellent bore. A smooth action which opperates perfectly. All colours remain intact on the rifle, the case-colour hardening of the action and receiver are of fantastic vivid greys and blues. – Way too pretty for a service weapon.
All blueing on the 30″ round barrel is intact as on the barrel bands and sights, nose cap etc. There is a trap in the steel butt plate for the cleaning rods and bottle, only the silvered bottle is present.
American Walnut stock in very good order with only minor dings and scuffs (it is hard to beleive that this rifle has been anywhere near an army barracks!) The stock has the correct “JSA/1902″ inspectors cartouch on the left of the wrist, which is clear and legible. Also mint is the “P” firing proof behind the trigger guard. The stock in general has very sharp and crisp lines. An excellent rifle – hard to fault.
