.45-70 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle with Rod Bayonet
An extremely clean example of Springfields M0del 1888 Trapdoor Breech loading rifle in .45-70 govt’.
s/n 507828 clearly stamped to rear of barrel tang. 52inches overall length. Barrell length 32 1/2 inches. Stock length 13 1/2 inches. Round blued barrel with two barrel bands, front with stacking and sling swivel, both stamped with ‘U’ Springfield inspectors stamp. Buffington rear sights graduated to 1500 yards fully functioning. Barrel stamped near breech with ‘V / P / Eagles head / P’. 95% blueing remaining. Bore excellent. Breech block stamped ‘US/model/1884’. No pitting or corosion in or around breech. Speckled grey finish on outside of breech block. Strong case hardening colours on inside. Action perfect. Flat lock plate marked with the American eagle and ‘US/SPRINGFIELD’. Trigger guard shows 90% high polished blue finish.
Stock excellent retaining polished finish. Limited dents and scratches due to handling. Left hand side of wrist with a clear ‘boxed’ cartouche ‘SWP/1890’. On left hand side of rifle butt large 3/4 inch stamped letters ‘F / 2’ On the underside of the butt, just rear of the trigger guard is the final proof circled “P” mark, but also the letters “C.B”.
Steel blued butt plate with swivel trap for cleaning rods retaining approx 10% blueing. Butt plate upper tang stamped ‘US’.
This, the last trapdoor Springfield model produced, has the ‘spike rod bayonet’. This stores neatly under the rifle when not in use, and by operation of the catch under the muzzel, there is 16 1/2 inches of useable bayonet. This is a survivor in extremely nice condition, highly useable, and very collectible.
