WW1 US Springfield Model 1903 Rifle……………..SOLD
Created on March 6th 2008
Scarce WW1 Springfield M1903 Bolt Action Service Rifle.
Serial No’ 866980 .30-06 caliber. 24″ Round barrel, parkerized finish and Walnut stock. This rifle is a good example of a World War One production 1903 Springfield. The rifle was produced in early 1917 and still retains its original WW1 barrel that is marked “SA over the Ordnance bomb over 3-17”. It has the correct milled barrel bands, trigger guard and floorplate with smooth buttplate. The receiver has the small single gas escape hole on the right side and lacks the Hatcher hole that was added to all new rifles built after 1936. It is fitted with a standard blade front sight with sight cover and the rear sight is the earlier 1912-1916 version that lacks the 2850 yard sighting notch on top of the ladder, which has the split-elevation knob with the later production windage adjustment knob. It has the WW2 era, two-bolt finger grove stock that would be correct for its time frame. There are however no inspector cartouches or “P” proof marks which all seem to have been removed. It is complete with a nice post WW1 era KERR sling.
Condition: Arsenal refurbished. 90% of the faded post WW1 parkerized finish which is thinning on the exposed areas of receiver remains. The same finish is also on the barrel bands, trigger guard and floorplate. The stock has been sanded and revarnished. The sling is excellent, the action good. This is a nice example of a WW1 1903 rifle. An extremely aesthetically pleasing rifle to look at.
British proofs have been added to facilitate sale in this country, and applied underneath the muzzle.
