U.S. 1903 Bolt Action Service Rifle
S/n 1426665, in .30-06 caliber, 24″ round barrel, blued and parkerized finish, walnut stock.
Once again we have the American military to thank for the fine condition of this rifle – they don’t put them away dirty! This one has been officially arsenal overhauled as done before they are taken out of active service and put into storage. Note: in the photo below, there are still traces of the highlighting paint in the sight graduations, as originally issued.
The barrel is marked behind the front sight “S.A. / Ordenance bomb / 1-33” denoting the barrels’ date of manufacture. The front sight is hooded. The rear sight is graduated up to 2850 yards. Most of the rifle is parkerized with the classic dark black green finish, which is a very effective rust preventative. The stock is a replacement and is of the pistol grip type, favoured by the marines – and for a military stock has a good grain pattern. It has the two reinforcing bolts and the high hump handguard and sight clearance cut, but no finger grooves. The butt-plate is the smooth type with trap for cleaning equipment.
The left-hand wrist of the stock has been stamped “S.A over E.McF.” in a box followed by crossed cannons and the small “P” mark under the stock. The bolt is the swept back type and the rifle has all its swivles.
The rifle is in fine condition all over, with a good action and very good barrel. There is a small chip on the forward edge of the pistol grip and a very competent arsenal repair to the toe of the butt near the rear sling swivle.
