U.S. WW2 Remington Produced M1903 in Scant grip stock…………SOLD
Created on April 13th 2014
The strangely termed “Modified” 1903 produced by Remington in the early years of WW2
This is the 1903 Rifle as produced by Remington until March of 1943. They carried on making the Springfield 1903 but “dropped” certain features to slim down the manufacturing process and so increase production. These changes gained the rifle the term “modified”. There were little or no actual modifications more, omissions. The rifle on offer is in the “Scant grip” stock. This stock also has no finger grooves in the fore-end, this was one of the modifications which cut down production time. Another change included the omission of the “lightening” grooves in the rear sight collar.
The breech of the rifle is marked as follows ” U.S. / REMINGTON / MODEL 1903 / 3313085″ The breech and action are in the original green parkerised finish, with some mild edge wear. The bolt, correctly, is blued, as are other components such as the rear sights and the trigger guard and magazine floor plate. None of the components on the rifle appear to be refinished. The strongest visible wear is on the bolt handle and the safety – parts which experience the most contact with skin. The rifle is chambered in .30-06 Govt’. The action has a magazine cut-off switch to the rear on the LHS, which is blued and marked “ON” and on the other side “OFF”. The serial number puts production of this 1903 in December of 1942. These rifles would only be made by Remington for a few more months and then completely discontinued in favor of the new 1903-A3. Springfield had long since ceased production of bolt action rifles.
This rifle has been restocked in a new scant grip or “ hogs back” stock, there are no inspectors cartouches externally. May of these stocks were produced in the war years as “spare” for replacement of broken items. Strangely enough although the A3 was well underway as far as development was concerned the 03 modified carried none of the laters pressed steel parts. Consequently all the external furniture or fittings on the rifle are of conventional cast, then milled construction. The stock is in fine condition with no cracks or serious dings, as is the humped hand guard.
The rifle is 43.1/2″ long overall. The round barrel is 23.1/2″ in length. The trigger “pull” is 13.” The stock has the two cross screw reinforcements below the action. Under the action is the trigger guard and magazine floor plate with facility to dump the rounds if necessary. The butt is fitted with a cross hatched steel butt-plate with hinged trap for cleaning equipment. The rifle has two sling swivels and a stacking hook attached to the nose cap. The steel nose cap will take either the long or the short pattern bayonet. (pictured with shortened bayonet)
The barrel markings behind the front sight ramp are marked as follows; “R.A. / flaming bomb design / 12 – 42.” This corresponds with the serial number and manufacturing data. Single blade front sight. The rear sights are graduated to 2700 yards and are fully adjustable for windage, with three sighting notches and one aperture. The bore is in good condition with strong four groove rifling with a right hand twist. The action cycles perfectly and ejects much the same. The rifle carries 2014 British proofs.
