 WW2 U.S. Remington 03-A3

This rifle remains in the finish it was first issued in and shows little sign of arsenal refurbishment. The breech reads as follows; ” U.S. / REMINGTON /MODEL 03-A3 / 3769028″  The serial number puts production in the months May to June 1943.  The date on the barrel is slightly different but close enough not to split hairs over.  It reads “R.A. / flaming bomb / 8 – 43″.   Rifle is chambered in .30-06 and has passed British proof.

This is a standard mid to late war production Remington 03-A3 where the complications of earlier rifles had been dropped and this simplified cheaper rifle was the norm. External fittings such as barrel bands, the rings and sling fittings, along with the magazine floor plate and trigger-guard were all now being made from pressed steel components.  The rear sight has also been simplified and moved to the rear of the action.  It has a simple aperture sight which slides up and down on a ramp graduated to 800 yards.  Windage is also possible with these sights by an adjusting screw at the side of the ramp and a scale to zero on at the rear of the ramp.

The stock and hand-guard are still walnut.  The rifle displays a good final proof circled “P”inspectors stamp.  Along the side of the wrist is the boxed cartouche of “FJA” and the faint crossed Remington cannons mark.  The stock is the two Bolt type.  There is a magazine cut-off switch on the LHS of the action.

Finish is appropriate to a rifle that has “been through the wars……..”  Most of the metal work is blued or an early parkerising fading to grey. The Mauser style bolt is blued with the swept back handle. Most of the components are marked with the Remington “R”.   The rifle is fitted with a two grove rifled barrel and has a slight light pitting at some points within.
