SPRINGFIELD 1903-A1 RIFLE…..SOLD

Created on December 3rd 2011

A good interwar years 1903 Springfield U.S. Service Rifle.

Serial number 1266151,  Overall length 43.1/2″  Barrel length 24″.

This 1903 is stocked in the two cross bolt  C-type stock which was fitted in the interwar years and consequently the rifle was known as the 1903-A1.  This a non-marked armoury replacement stock, which has not been sanded or refinished and has good sharp edges about the pistol grip.  The serial number puts production of the receiver in 1924 where as the barrel dates are 3-29.  This is not unusual as many parts often got held in stock before useage.

The breech is marked as follows ” U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / ARMOURY / MODEL1903. / 1266151″  Single gas escape hole in RHS of breech.   The overall finish of the rifle is the original Springfield blued (black) which has not been over finished with grey green parkerisation.  The barrel marked thus; “S.A. / flaming bomb / 3-29 ”  also finished in the blue.  Standard Mauser bolt action with integral 5 shot magazine, with detachable floor plate.  Flag safety at rear of bolt, marked “READY” and “SAFE”.  Blued magazine cut-off switch at rear of action.

The general condition of the stock is very good, with no splits, cracks or serious dents.  It is the authors opinion that this stock was fitted when the rifle was taken out of service and stored by the army.  The handguard looks to be the original fitment with slightly more indication of usage.  Non-swept back Springfield bolt handle with “R” for Remington marked safety shroud.

There is a grey finish to the trigger guard and floor plate, as with the barrel band fore end cap. Two sling swivels and steel butt plate with trap for cleaing equipment.  Mechanically fine with an excellent four groove bore – no pitting or misting with strong rifling.  Single blade front sight.

£1650.
