U.S. M1903 Springfield Rifle with C-stock. (f 323)…SOLD
Created on April 24th 2013
A Good Standard Issue U.S. Springfield Service Rifle from between the wars
Caliber .30-06. Length 43.1/4″ overall. Barrel length 24″ Two piece, pistol grip, American Black Walnut stock with two cross bolts. 5-shot internal magazine which can be stripper clip loaded from the top. Worn grey parkerized finish to all the metalwork.
The stock is in good condition with a even polished patina to both parts. There are no cartouches on either the wrist or proof marks behind the trigger guard. This points to the strong possibility that it was a war time replacement from stock piles of spares and replacement items, The hand-guard is the later type adopted after it was decided that the early high-hump type was to fragile. The butt-plate is cross checkered with a trap for cleaning equipment (AF)
The action is the classic Mauser type bolt system with flag safety. The swept bolt stem is marked with “N.S” for Nickle Steel and center punched on the underside of the same in the Springfield manner. The bolt release catch doubles as the magazine cut-off switch to the rear of the action. The dishing for the cut-out switch in the stock is vacant of initials. The only part of the rifle with a hint of the later green parkerizing is the magazine follower, but even this is very worn. Serrated Springfield trigger within original blued trigger guard.
The receiver bridge has the following markings; ” U. S. / SPRINGFIELD / ARMORY / MODEL 1903 / 1515982.” The serial number confirms the date of production as being after 1935 where some records end, and is close enough to be within range / time of the barrel date, confirming that the barrel is original to the action. The barrel is marked behind the front sight as follows; “S. A. / flaming bomb motif / 3 – 37″ The bore is the conventional 4 grove type with some light pitting down each side, though it has just passed proof. Standard flip up ladder sight with four notch sights and one aperture, with windage adjustment.
The rear sights are graduated to 2700 yards and are mounted on a “lightening cut” barrel collar. The rifle is fitted with two sling swivels and a stacking hook. The nose cap also doubles as the bayonet stud mounting point, this is marked with an “H” denoting hardened steel. Single blade front sight. A perfectly presentable 1903 Springfield in the correct “C-stock”.
